Fall is in the air, friends! The freshening winds have me itching to update my wardrobe, so Amanda and I bopped over to our favorite consignment shop, Village Style, to check out their latest inventory and play around with incorporating this season’s trends. Typically one to err on the conservative side of fashion, I’ve come to love consignment shopping for trying new things and stepping outside of my comfort zone. When you can buy gently used (or even new) high quality pieces for a fraction of the price, it’s a really low risk way of trying something different! We’ve noticed animal print is popping up absolutely everywhere this season, and Village Style has quite a bit to choose from. Shelly and her staff offer amazing attention to detail, extensive knowledge, and their customer focused approach always helps guide and focus our shopping experience.

Look One

Given my propensity to maintain a classic and minimal wardrobe, I have traditionally shied away from animal print. It always felt a little bold for my taste, but it doesn’t have to be. By now, Shelly knows this about me, so she suggested I ease into it with a simple animal print pump, utilizing this trend to redefine the “neutral shoe,” rather than pigeonholing it to “statement piece.” What I love about this tactic is that animal print encompases blacks, browns, tans and every shade of neutral you can hope for. As a result, they go with absolutely everything! Talk about the “new” neutral. We opted to pair these pumps with a classic skinny jean and jewel tones on the top for a casual office or lunch date vibe. I have a tendency to start dressing in darker tones as the temperatures begin to dive (burgundy is a fall and winter favorite!), but fall does not preclude pops of color! I love the rich, cool tones of the purple blouse because this bold shade is appropriate for multiple seasons, merely by changing the color pairings. Coming from the opposite side of the trusty color wheel, the deep yellow of this saffron scarf is the perfect fall color compliment and adds a layer of removable warmth on these chilly fall mornings that blossom into sunny afternoons. If wearing two bold colors and an animal print shoe has you saying “whoa!” you can just as easily pair the shoe and a bold blouse with a camel or black scarf to tone it down.  This outfit could also benefit from a tasteful animal print clutch…. The possibilities are endless! One warning: wearing joyful colors on a gray fall or winter day becomes addictive! Especially with consignment prices, why not give mixing opposing colors a try?

Look Two

Once firmly comfortable with the pumps and ready to branch out, we settled on an animal print pencil skirt paired with a crisp white blouse and neutral pump for a snappy office wear look. Our tactic here was to keep it simple and look effortlessly chic. We tempered the bold skirt by incorporating super classic accompaniments and a boldly colored bag for fun. We selected a deep orange pop in homage to fall colors, but this look could just as easily pair with a bold red for a vintage look, forest green for an earthier palette, or simply wear your favorite colorful bag and make sure to use a complementary shoe and earrings to tie everything together. The net result is a freshly updated classic look that keeps you feeling current.

As a general rule when adding animal print to your wardrobe, select animal prints recreated in their natural tones. To create outfits that are colorful but not crazy, wear animal prints with at least one other neutral item, as we did with the denim and white blouse in these two looks. Add at least one pop of color, and you’ve got a modern, fun, neutral item you can mix and match whenever you feel a bit ho-hum this fall!
